All About Slim | ![]() |
I am Slim, aka Roy "Wes" McGee, Jr. I was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in 1968 and ran away from home at the age of 7. Naaa, not really. Dad's job moved him to Lake Charles, so at the age of 7, we moved to a little town outside of Lake Charles, Louisiana called Moss Bluff. Dad played guitar and had been in several bands in his younger days. He still got together with friends he worked with and knew and would play at our house, or one of theirs, for New Years, Christmas, or Fourth of July. It was during these young years that I became interested in playing guitar. Just wanted to be like my Dad. So he wrote down some chords and told me when I could wrap my fingers around the neck of his guitar he'd show me some more. Didn't take me long to get frustrated and give up. I'd pick it up and set it down a few times till the age of fourteen. I'd started trying to learn yet again with my chords and some old Willie Nelson 8-track tapes. Well I got frustrated once again and of all things my older sister "Koen",(AKA: Kokamajojo from Alamanono), decided to pick it up and learn.... This kinda got to me. So I waited and as soon as she set that guitar down I picked it up and ran with it and never put it down since. I learned every Willie Nelson, (Thanks to Aunt Linda who sent me Willie Nelson Tapes and Song Books), song he had recorded at the time. And he basically became a hero to me. Later on I found an old AC/DC 8-track in my oldest sister "Naomi's" pile and started learning how to play rock and roll. I would spend the next several years playing country with my Dad at New Years parties, and playing Rock and Roll with my friends after school. Moving on to college, at the age of 20, found me going through a divorce. I had a very good friend at the time by the name of David Bright. He told me that I just HAD to listen to this tape he had of some guy that played blues. Some guy by the name of Stevie Ray Vaughan. The year was 1989. At that time my music teacher wanted me to play a song for recital hour called Riviera Paradise. A song I never heard. Things came into place for me one morning as I sat in recital hall reading the paper and read the headlines that Stevie Ray Vaughan had died in a helicopter crash the day before. And I remembered the tape my friend had given me. I listened to it and heard the song Riviera Paradise. And I thought this is pretty good. So I listened to the whole tape. Then I listened to it again. Then again. Then I just wanted to be able to play like that. Oh..... And I did go back and do Riviera Paradise for recital hour. Also like my Dad, I played in several bands through the years. Then a few years back I moved to Texas, to work in the manufacturing business. Here is where I met my Brother-in-Law, whom I call my brother, Boudreaux, aka Roger Craig. And so that all of my sisters are included. I wouldn't have met Boudreaux if it weren't for my little sister, Dawn, (Doodlesquat, aka DooDoo). Boudreaux is Texas born and raised, and if you want to know why he is called 'Boudreaux', you'll have to hit the link to his web page and ask him. This is where I was introduced to Texas Americana, and that Hill Country sound played and sung by so many artists that live in and call this area home. I also got myself introduced to the Hill Country scenery and flavor as it is seen from the seat of a Harley Davidson. There is no end to the beauty that can be seen, heard, felt, or tasted out here in this neck of the country. Luckenbach is a regular stop for me and Boudreaux on most weekends that we ride. Good music and friendly people. (Wish the beer would come back down from $4 a bottle however, but still nice stop for any rider.) The last few years have been spent learning/combining styles with my Brother who is just as accomplished a player as I if not better. (You can always learn something new from someone else when it comes to playing the guitar.) We've written some new stuff, redid some old stuff, laid it down, recorded it, burnt it, and hope you'll listen to it and like it, or find some meaning in your lives as it has to ours. As a sidenote...... for those of you who know me, but are wondering....... "Slim and Boudreaux????". Well, long story short, Boudreaux took his family and my daughter off on a vacation for two weeks a couple of years back. Me being bored and having recieve an email from Boudreaux like something out of an old Clint Eastwood movie that began... "The streets were covered with blood..... I swung open the doors of the saloon... etc. etc."..... Well, I began writing a funny little dialogue back every night pickin' on everybody that we worked with.... I had a nickname for Boudreaux.... "Boudreaux"..... but had none for me..... so I made up Slim....... and as you can see from our license plates..... It just kinda stuck...... I owe that one to DooDoo as well... Should I be able to find them.... I may post them here as well...... (I'll have to edit the first episode however..... Hershey had a bad mouth on him.... ) Thats all that can be said about me. Thanks for readin' and remember, Play it loud, And keep the rubber side down..... Slim |
